Interior Shutters Gatineau
Wood or PVC shutters, honeycomb, day/night, top-down/bottom-up. The models that don't fit any other category but make the difference in the right room.
Interior shutters are a choice that ages well: adjustable louvres, clean lines, durable materials. This page brings together the custom blinds that sit a little outside the usual categories but make all the difference in the right room: wood or PVC shutters, honeycomb blinds, day/night blinds and Roman shades.
All are custom made in our Gatineau workshop.
Custom shutters: wood, PVC or aluminum
Interior shutters take their cue from classic window shutters. The louvres tilt to control light and view, or close fully for privacy.
Wood or PVC
- Wood (basswood): a warm finish that pairs well with wood trim and hardwood floors.
- PVC: more resistant to humidity. A good candidate for the kitchen, bathroom or laundry room.
- Aluminum: also available for slimmer louvres.
Louvres come in 2 in or 2½ in. Wider louvres show more of the view when open; narrower ones give a finer look. If you’re undecided, compare them with our horizontal blinds in wood, faux wood and aluminum.
Honeycomb (cellular) blinds
A honeycomb blind is built from cells that trap a layer of air in front of the glass. It comes in single or double cell, in opaque or translucent fabric, with 3/8 in, ½ in or ¾ in cells.
A double cell generally acts as an extra insulating layer in front of the window. Our specifications list a value of up to R-4.5 for the double-cell blackout version.
Day/night blinds, Roman shades and more
We also make:
- day/night (alternated) blinds, which alternate translucent and opaque bands;
- Roman shades, for a soft, textile look;
- pleated blinds;
- flexible horizontal blinds;
- woven (intertwined) wooden blinds.
Not sure whether you want Roman or roller? Read our guide to Roman shades vs. roller shades.
Controls and configurations
| Control | What it offers |
|---|---|
| Cord or chain | simple and proven |
| Top-down / bottom-up | light from above, privacy below |
| Somfy motor (on request) | remote control, tall or hard-to-reach windows |
The top-down / bottom-up configuration is especially useful in a bedroom, a bathroom or on a ground floor, where you want daylight without being seen from the street. For motorization, see our page on motorized blinds.
How to choose
- Think about the room: humidity, exposure, need for privacy.
- Decide on light: adjustable (shutters), softened (translucent honeycomb), blocked (opaque or blackout honeycomb).
- Consider insulation: a double cell deserves a close look for a cold window.
- Measure, or let us do it: our guide to measuring windows explains inside and outside mounts.
Care and everyday use
Most of these blinds need little upkeep. Dust shutters and honeycomb blinds regularly with a soft cloth or a vacuum brush attachment, and wipe PVC louvres with a slightly damp cloth. Cleaning methods can vary by material and fabric, so ask us what suits your blind. Avoid soaking wood, and don’t force a stuck mechanism: if a blind is damaged, our repair service can look at it.
Made, measured and warrantied
The usual lead time is 3 to 5 weeks. On request, an advisor comes to measure each window to the 1/8 inch, included in your quote. Fabrication is covered by a lifetime warranty; the mechanism by a 5 to 10-year warranty depending on the model. We serve Gatineau (including Hull, Aylmer and Buckingham), Chelsea, Cantley, Ottawa and the Outaouais.

What we get asked most
Are double-cell honeycombs really more insulating?
Yes. The trapped air between the two cells creates a thermal barrier, which helps in front of a north-facing or poorly insulated window. In summer, the same barrier helps limit heat coming in. The gain depends on the window, how well the blind fits and the fabric.
What's the difference between wood and PVC shutters?
Wood (basswood) has a natural finish that can be stained or painted and suits dry rooms well. PVC handles humidity better, which makes it a good fit for kitchens and bathrooms. Both are made with 2 in or 2½ in louvres.
What does top-down / bottom-up mean?
It's a blind that opens from the top, the bottom, or both. You can lower the top rail to let daylight in while keeping privacy at the lower part of the window. The configuration is available on several of our models, including honeycomb blinds.
What cell size should I choose for a honeycomb blind?
We offer 3/8 in, ½ in and ¾ in cells. Smaller cells give a finer look and suit smaller windows; larger cells suit larger windows. The fabric can be opaque or translucent, depending on how much light you want.
How long does it take to make these blinds?
The usual lead time is 3 to 5 weeks. Every blind is made to order in our Gatineau workshop. On request, an advisor measures each window to the 1/8 inch, and that visit is included in your quote.
Can these blinds be motorized?
Yes. Somfy motorization is available on request, along with cord and chain controls. A remote is included with a motor. The mechanism warranty ranges from 5 to 10 years depending on the model, and fabrication is covered for life.
