Motorized Blinds Gatineau
Somfy motors, wired or radio. Works with Google Home, Alexa, and Apple HomeKit, with scheduled morning and evening scenes.
Motorized blinds in Gatineau are mostly about convenience: open or close every window with one touch, with no cords to pull and no stepping up on a chair. They also make sense for tall windows, wide picture windows and blinds that are hard to reach.
We work with Somfy motors, and we make the blinds and drapes in our Gatineau workshop, ready to take the motor.
How motorized blinds work
A small motor, built into the blind’s tube or the curtain track, replaces the cord or chain. You control it remotely. A remote is included; a wall switch, an app and voice control are available as options.
Three ways to power the motors
| Power | Best suited to |
|---|---|
| Wired, 120 V | new construction or major renovation |
| Rechargeable Li-ion battery | renovation, with no wiring work |
| Solar panel (recharges the battery) | well-lit windows |
Wired power is best planned during construction. In a renovation, the radio (battery) version can generally be installed without opening walls.
Home automation and scenes
A gateway (Somfy Tahoma) connects your motors to the connected home. Controls work with Google Home, Alexa, Apple HomeKit and Zigbee.
In practice, that means:
- Grouped scenes: “living room,” “bedroom,” “whole house.”
- Scheduled routines: blinds open in the morning and close in the evening, at times you choose.
- Sun, wind and temperature sensors, so the blinds respond to conditions.
- Voice control, if you already have a smart assistant at home.
Radio range is up to 20 m through standard walls, depending on how the building is built.
What can be motorized
- Roller and solar shades
- Day-night (alternated) blinds
- Vertical blinds
- Sliding panels
- Roman shades and interior shutters, on request
- Curtains on a Somfy Glydea motorized track
We can often motorize existing blinds. It depends on the mechanism: we assess on site whether a simple motor will do or whether the mechanism needs replacing.
Why go motorized
- Accessibility: ideal for tall windows, skylights, or anyone who finds cords hard to handle.
- A cleaner look: no cord or chain hanging down. It’s also a cordless option for homes with young children.
- Light control: adjusting the blinds several times a day becomes effortless.
- Handy when you’re away: a schedule can open and close the blinds while you travel.

Good to know before you choose
- New build or renovation: in new construction, plan the wiring early. In a renovation, the radio version avoids opening walls.
- Large windows: the wider or heavier the blind, the more a motor adds to daily comfort.
- One system: putting blinds and curtains on the same remote or app keeps things simple.
- Backup operation: ask us how the blind can be operated if the battery runs flat.
- Batteries: rechargeable models need an occasional recharge, and the solar option can reduce how often you plug them in.

What we get asked most
Can existing blinds be motorized?
Often yes, if the mechanism is compatible (roller, alternated, vertical, Roman). We assess on site. Sometimes we swap the mechanism, sometimes a motor simply drops in. The visit also lets us check where to plug the motor in or where the battery should sit.
How do you control motorized blinds?
A remote is included. As options, you can add a wall switch or an app, and voice control works through Google Home, Alexa or Apple HomeKit. You can also group blinds into scenes, such as living room, bedroom or the whole house.
Do motorized blinds need electrical wiring?
Not necessarily. Motors can be wired (120 V), run on a rechargeable Li-ion battery, or be paired with a small solar panel. Wiring is best planned during construction; in a renovation, the radio (battery) version is generally the simplest.
What warranty comes with the motors?
Somfy motors carry a 5-year warranty. The fabric and mechanism of the blind have their own warranty, which depends on the product you choose. If something goes wrong, contact us. We can also repair or replace parts.
Do motorized blinds work with Google Home, Alexa or HomeKit?
Yes. A Somfy gateway (Tahoma) links the motors to your smart-home system, compatible with Google, Alexa, HomeKit and Zigbee. You can then open or close the blinds by voice or on a schedule, for example at your usual wake-up time.
Can curtains be motorized too?
Yes. Our curtains can hang on a Somfy Glydea motorized track, wired or radio. They open and close at the press of a button on the remote, which is handy for wide windows or heavy fabrics.
